Abstract/Contents: | The effect of water-imbibing polyacrylamide material was studied in relation to the playing quality, ground cover response and physical properties of sand-based turf receiving simulated football-type wear. The polyacrylamide gave a number of advantages, most notable increased moisture retention, a reduction in hardness in dry weather and an apparent increase in ground cover during wear. At high incorporation rates, however, the polyacrylamide produces a surface which was too soft for satisfactory play and because variation of the rate of the polymer produced such large changes in the nature of the playing surface it is essential that the material is mixed very accurately. The effect of the polyacrylamide decreased over the 27 months after construction but this would be partially compensated for by a build-up of organic matter in the sand surface, which would help reduce hardness in dry weather and increase moisture retention. |
