Abstract/Contents:Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentrations were measured in the drainage water eluted from fine turf rootzones of medium-fine sand, sandy loam soil and a 2:1 sand-soil mix contained in lysimeters. During 1987 the annual fertiliser rate was 20.0 g m-2 N (as ammonium sulphate), l.l g m-2 P (as superphosphate) and 12.5 g m-2 K (as potassium sulphate). In 1988 these rates were doubled. In 1987 concentrations of nitrate in drainage water were well below the European Community limit for drinking water once a dense turf cover had formed. In the following year a large amount of nitrate was lost during late autumn, particularly from the soil-only rootzone. There were large potassium losses in all rootzones, especially those containing soil, in which indigenous potassium was leached. The concentrations of phosphate were extremely low in the leachate from all 3 rootzones.
