Abstract/Contents:Studies performed ten years ago in which perlite was used in golf green construction are giving very positive results. Perlite is a volanic glass material that has a cavitated surface. Water and nutrients are trapped in the cavities until needed, and the durable granules create air passages. The topmix for the greens consisted of 70% plaster sand, 20% fine sand sized perlite and 10% nitro-humus, with a clay content of 1.5 to 4.5%. Perlite worked best in medium textured sand. The greens in which perlite was added met all U.S.G.A. standards for bulk density, compaction, water retention and infiltration. The total porosity was increased 10-15% while water retention rose 5%, bringing it up to the recommended amount of at least 12%. Bulk density was decreased to meet U.S.G.A. specifications. However, the addition of perlite was unable to reduce the infiltration rate for coarse and fine sands. It did decrease the rate for medium textured sand to meet the standard. The greens with the addition of perlite also have performed well in extended heavy play, standing up to 100,000 rounds of play each year with only short delays after heavy rains.
