Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard:"A very truly rare, early booklet on the seed establishment and subsequent culture of turfgrasses on estate lawns and tennis courts, with small sections on cricket grounds and putting greens. It contains interesting large photographs of typical turfgrass uses in the 1890s. The suggested enrichment of soil prior to planting turfgrasses in England involved the following procedures in the 1890s:

Grass is a fixed crop, chiefly deriving its nourishment from a few inches near the surface, and the only way of refreshing it is by raking or harrowing and top- dressing. Hence there are obvious reasons for putting the land into good heart before sowing. Well-rotted stable manure is always beneficial, but that which is fresh should be avoided because of its tendency to make the soil hollow. Where artificial manure is more convenient, two cwt. of superphosphate of lime, one cwt. of Peruvian guano, and one cwt. of bone dust, mixed together, constitute an excellent dressing. The quantities named are sufficient for an acre, and the mixture can be sown when the processes of raking and rolling are in progress. Suttons A1 Lawn Manure can also be recommended with confidence, as it contains all the constituents essential to the growth of fine grasses and clovers. Three cwt. required per acre. After the application of artificial manure not less than ten days should elapse before sowing the grasses." p. 350
