Abstract/Contents:"Zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp. Willd.) is known for its low nitrogen (N) fertilization requirement and for its slow establishment rate. Zoysiagrass has been observed to have increased growth under varying sources of N in a greenhouse experiment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of N source and N rate on the percent cover, dark green color index (DGCI), turf density, turf quality, and clipping yield of established 'Cavalier' zoysiagrass (Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr) and 'Meyer' zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) in separate field trials in 2008 and 2009 in Fayetteville, AR. Calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, and urea were used as separate N sources and each was applied monthly at two rates, 19.5 and 39.0 kg N ha-1, per month between May and September for a total of 98 or 195 kg N ha-1 yr-1, respectively. Nitrogen source rarely affected turf density and DGCI, and did not affect cover, turf quality, or clipping yield of either Meyer or Cavalier zoysiagrass. Nitrogen rate affected DGCI, density, quality, and clipping yield for both cultivars with the high N rate (195 kg ha-1 yr-1) increasing DGCI for both cultivars, increasing Meyer zoysiagrass turf quality, and increasing clipping yields of both cultivars. Cavalier zoysiagrass clipping yield was increased approximately 20% and Meyer zoysiagrass 32% when N rate was increased from 98 kg ha-1 yr-1 to 195 kg ha-1 yr-1. Based on this research, zoysiagrass managers can achieve similar results with various N source fertilizers."
