| Abstract/Contents: | Leaf area was shown to be a suitable criterion for varietal identification in the grass species Lolium perenne, Festuca rubra, Poa pratensis, Phleum pratense and Phleum bertolonii. The tillering phase (2.3-2.5 on the Feekes-Heyland scale) was the best time for separating varieties. Varietal characteristics were expressed to varying degrees depending on planting method and growing medium; direct sowing in a peat moss substrate is recommended for this test. Increasing plant population density from 25 to 100 plants per seedpan did not affect the findings. |
