Abstract/Contents:"Determination of the nutrient needs of turfgrass with foliar analysis has been hampered by the lack of a basic understanding of the effect of major element deficiency, the season, and the method of sampling on nutrient concentrations. The objectives of this study were: 1) to observe the seasonal effects of phosphorus on yield, overall desirability, and chemical composition of 'Merion' Kentucky bluegrass, 2) to compare sampling methods to determine which provided the most reliable estimate of the relationship between phosphorus soil test values and phosphorus content of clippings, and 3) to compare the reliability of soil testing and foliar analysis to accurately determine soil fertility. The experiment was conducted in a controlled temperature greenhouse on a Caldwell silt loam with a Bray phosphorus (P1) of 2.2 kg/ha. Levels of phosphorus incorporation ranged from 0 to 640 parts phosphorus/2 million parts soil (PP2MP). Eight clipping dates were utilized for chemical analysis of tissue. Soil tests for P were taken on four of the eight dates. On these same four dates two methods of tissue sampling, first blade and general clipping, were compared to determine which provided a more accurate estimate of nutrient availability. Foliar concentrations of N, K, P, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, B, Cu, Zn, Al, Sr, Mo Na, Si, and Ba were determined. It was concluded that: 1) P availability influenced foliar element concentrations, 2) seasonal fluctuations of foliar element concentrations are significant, 3) physiologically young tissue should be avoided in sampling, 4) correlations between tissue phosphorus content and yield were stronger than correlations between phosphorus soil test values and yield, and 5) further studies are needed to investigate the possibility of utilizing foliar analysis for determination of the nutrient requirements of turfgrass."
