| Abstract/Contents: | "Data from multi-centre trials on turfgrass use of Lolium perenne L. cultivars show significant positive rank correlations between some seed characters (germination and germination vigour) and initial establishment, in the period between sowing and the first cut, but not afterwards. There are no significant positive correlations between seed size and initial establishment, and the conflicting effects of the relationship between seed size and seed number are briefly discussed. Most of the results are predictable from the literature on seed and seedling vigour, but they are reported (a) to show the danger of false conclusions about centre x cultivar interactions during the stablishment phase of muti-centre trials, (b) to stress that true cultivar differences in speed of establishment, if claimed, must be distinguished clearly from the effects of seed character, and (c) to draw the attention of seedsmen and seed users to the importance of seed characters when the fastest possible establishment of L. perenne is required." |
