Abstract/Contents:"The persistence of species and cultivars is described and discussed on the basis of data from (a) two collections of cultivars (sown in 1970 and 1971 respectively), (b) a trial on four different soil types, and (c) a trial with two intensities of artificial wear and two mowing heights. The persistence of sown species over several years was determined, as relative frequency, in 1975 and 1977. Various assessments of other characters - including establishment in the first year of a trial, appearance in summer and winter, and resistance to diseases - were made during the trials and are compared with relative frequencies, on the basis of the rank correlation coefficients. Attention is drawn to differences among species and cultivars at various wear intensities and mowing heights, and to cultivar x treatment interactions. Nevertheless, in general, it was apparent that each cultivar had its own inherent degree of persistence, evident in the consistency of ranking orders under different intensities of wear, and very little affected by soil type, disease or environmental factors (the principal exception being summer conditions). Correlations between grass cover in the first twelve months of a trial and persistence determined several years after sowing indicated that reliable discrimination between species and cultivars can be obtained quite quickly in trials. There was also an indication that tolerance of artificial wear can be satisfactorily determined after a relatively short period of treatment."
