| Abstract/Contents: | "Seventy-two cultivars of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were evaluated at the Joseph Valentine Research Center, University Park, Pa. The study was established in September, 1986, in a completly [completely] randomized block design with three replications. The 4 x 6 plots were seeded at a rate of 5 lbs / 1000 sq.ft. Plots were mowed at 1.25 in and received 2.25 lbs nitrogen / 1000 sq.ft. (0.9 lbs in April and 1.35 lbs in September). Weeds were controlled with 2,4-D, 2,4-DP, pendimethalin, dicamba, and ethofumesate. The area was irrigated to prevent severe drought stress. Quality was rated on May 3 and June 30 using a scale of 0-9, where 9 = best quality. Color, density, weed and disease presence were criteria in assessing quality. Plots were rated on June 30 for percent area affected with red thread disease (Laetisaria fuciformis). This percentage was then converted to a scale of 1-10 where 1100% of plot affected using a modified Horsefall-Barret scale. Ratings were subjected to analysis of variance and Fisher's protected lsd at the 5 percent level." |
