Abstract/Contents:"Dallisgrass (Paspalum dilatatum Poir.) is a common and problematic weed of the south and occurs predominantly in the coastal plains, but does persist in the Piedmont and mountainous regions of Virginia. Current control recommendations for dallisgrass include sequential applications of MSMA alone or tank mixed with simazine, foramsulfuron or sulfosulfuron. These herbicides are registered for use in warm season turfgrasses. Any of these herbicides used alone or without sequential applications only suppress dallisgrass. EPA has introduced legislation that could lead to greater restriction on the use of or a refusal to reregister MSMA for turfgrass markets. Our objectives are to screen herbicides and herbicide combinations that could potentially be used for dallisgrass control in turfgrass. Dallisgrass was harvested with a sod cutter at Chatmoss Country Club in the Piedmont region near Danville, Virginia. Sod was washed and dallisgrass plants were selected that contained roots, rhizomes, and 3 to 5 tillers. These plants were immediately transplanted into 15 by 15 cm pots with mixed 50/50 silt-loam and sand soil media on March 7, 2007. Dallisgrass was allowed to acclimate and continue to mature in the greenhouse under weekly mowing at 5 cm for 1 year before trial initiation on March 13, 2008. Ninety total treatments were included in this trial, we will not list them all but will discuss them with relevance. A randomized complete block experimental design was used with 4 replications. Statistical analysis was preformed with Fisher's Protected LSD (P = 0.05). Herbicides or herbicide combinations of interest were applied in single applications or up to 3 sequential applications at 2 week intervals depending upon the suspected utility of specific products. Industry standard treatments mentioned above and nontreated comparison treatments were included. Our discussion will focus on treatments with greater than 60% control 2 to 4 weeks after final application (WA). Those herbicides in treatments that did not control dallisgrass more than 60% included metsulfuron, quinclorac, imazaquin, metribuzin, flazasulfuron, sulfentrazone, flucarbazone, amicarbazone, mesotrione, and others especially when these products were applied alone. The industry standard treatment of MSMA at 2400 kg/ha alone or in combination with metribuzin at 986 g ai/ha, applied in 3 sequential applications controlled 79 and 89% of dallisgrass 2 WA. Glyphosate (Roundup ProMax) at 280-1120 g ai/ha was the only herbicide that controlled dallisgrass significantly better than the industry standard treatments. Glyphosate treated dallisgrass plants were the only ones that did not recover and regrow to substantial levels by the studies end (8 WA). Glyphosate can not be used for selective control in cool-season turfgrass, but in bermudagrass turf, rates of 280 to 840 g ai/ha may be useful, or in situations where bermudagrass has entered dormancy. Treatments containing imazapic at 52 g ai/ha controlled dallisgrass equivalent to the industry standard and warrants further investigation in warm-season turf. Sequential applications of foramsulfuron in combination with MSMA and MSMA followed by two applications of foramsulfuron controlled dallisgrass 66 and 64%, respectively and much dallisgrass recovered by 8 WA. Sequential applications of tembotrione at 276 g ai/ha and topramezone at 55 g ai/ha alone controlled dallisgrass 61% and 49%, respectively. Thiencarbazone methyl at 32 g ai/ha alone or in combination with foramsulfuron applied in sequential applications controlled dallisgrass 64 and 74%, respectively. Other than glyphosate, much recovery and regrowth was observed from aforementioned treatments, however these treatments preformed best when compared to all others and do hold promise for use in a program approach to dallisgrass control in cool- and warm-season turfgrass. Further field research is needed to warrant recommendations of these treatments for selective dallisgrass control strategies."
