Abstract/Contents: | "Crabgrass (Digitaria sp.) is one of the most troublesome summer annual weeds in the south. Crabgrass usually germinates in late April or early May and persists throughout the summer. Crabgrass can be found in most turfgrass species and can tolerate low mowing heights. Common crabgrass control strategies include using pre emergent herbicides in the spring and using post emergent selective herbicides to control any crabgrass that emerges. Prodiamine is among the most common preemergence herbicides used for crabgrass control. This common herbicide was recently combined with a new sedge and broadleaf herbicide, sulfentrazone, to produce a value-added preemergence herbicide called Echelon 4SC. Our objective is to evaluate the control of smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum L.) using Echelon 4SC (sulfentrazone+prodiamine) and Echelon on fertilizer (sulfentrazone+prodiamine 24-5-11) at three different application timings. Studies were conducted in Blacksburg, VA at the Glade Road Research Facility on Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and at the Turfgrass Research Center on perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). A randomized complete block design was used at both locations. Treatments included Echelon 4SC (470 g ai/ha), Echelon on fertilizer (470 g ai/ha), and Dimension (dithiopyr) (157 g ai/ha) as a comparison. Treatments were applied on April 1 at the PRE stage, June 11 at the 1-4 leaf, and July 1 at the 1-2 tiller stage. Data collected included cover, control, and injury. Means were separated using Fisher's LSD. Applying treatments at the PRE timing controls smooth crabgrass > 40% better than other application timings. Smooth crabgrass control did not significantly differ between the 1-4 leaf and 1-2 tiller application timings. Furthermore, smooth crabgrass control did not significantly differ between the three herbicides tested in perennial ryegrass. However, in Kentucky bluegrass Echelon 4SC and Dimension controlled smooth crabgrass significantly better (>40%) than Echelon on fertilizer when applied at the PRE stage. Treatments did not injure Kentucky bluegrass or perennial ryegrass." |
