| Abstract/Contents: | "Multi-centre trials of Lolium perenne in 1974-78 included eleven cultivars of eight other grasses of known or possible value for amenity use in the U. K., subject to two relatively low maintenance regimes, one with fortnightly mowing at 25 mm (cuttings returned) and one with mowing twice a year at 50 mm (cutting removed). The layout of the plots was, for various management reasons, such as to preclude formal statistical analysis of the results. Height of growth and ground cover under both regimes are reported and compared with those of Lolium perenne 'Aberystwyth S.23'. The cultivars representing Agrostis castellana, Festuca rubra ssp. commutata and F. longifolia were shorter and maintained better ground cover than 'Aberystwyth S.23' in both trials: the cultivars of Phleum spp. were equally short, but with poorer persistence. By contrast, cultivars of L. multiflorum were taller and much less persistent than 'Aberystwyth S.23'. Cultivars representing F. rubra ssp. rubra, F. pratensis and F. arundinacea were, broadly, between these two extreme groups in height and ground cover." |
