Abstract/Contents:"Annual bluegrass is a problematic weed in creeping bentgrass greens. Aesthetically, there are distinct texture and color differences between the grasses. Annual bluegrass seedheads produce an uneven putting surface. Annual bluegrass is highly susceptible to disease-causing pathogens which can infest creeping bentgrass. There are currently no postemergence herbicide options labeled in North Carolina for annual bluegrass control in creeping bentgrass greens. Research was conducted to evaluate single and sequential postemergence applications of amicarbazone treated in late summer, early fall and early spring for annual bluegrass control and creeping bentgrass tolerance. Tolerance trials in a putting green block consisting of 'A1', 'A4', 'Crenshaw' and 'L93' bentgrass cultivars were established at Lake Wheeler Road Turf Field Lab in Wake County and treated in 2007 - 08. A 'Penncross' bentgrass green infested with annual bluegrass was located at Sandhills Research Station in Montgomery County and treated in 2008. Plot sizes for all bentgrass trials were 1.2 x 1.8 m. An annual bluegrass-infested common bermudagrass fairway was treated in 2007 - 08 and located at Hidden Valley Golf Club in Wake County. Plot size was 1.5 x 3 m. All treatments were replicated 4 times and applied at 304 l/ha and 193 kPa with a 4-nozzle, 25.4 cm spacing boom containing XR 8002VS nozzles. Amicarbazone at 131 and 261 g ai/ha was applied at Lake Wheeler Road Turf Field Lab and Hidden Valley Golf Club. Applications were initiated in 2007 on Sep 5 with no sequential treatments, Oct 15 (Lake Wheeler) or 16 (Hidden Valley) with and without a sequential treatment on Nov 5 (Lake Wheeler) or 6 (Hidden Valley), and in 2008 on Apr 2 with and without a sequential treatment on Apr 24. Amicarbazone was applied at 123 and 246 g ai/ha at Sandhills Research Station with treatment dates in 2008 consisting of Apr 7, Apr 7 followed by Apr 29 and Apr 7 followed by May 12. Data presented are visual observations that include percent annual bluegrass control, bentgrass phytotoxicity and bentgrass stand reduction. At Hidden Valley Golf Club, single amicarbazone applications on Sep 5 and Oct 16 resulted in 0% annual bluegrass control when evaluated May 21, 2008. The historic drought in North Carolina during 2007 was the main factor for the lack of control. After rains in late Oct, partial annual bluegrass control was achieved with Nov 6 sequential amicarbazone treatments (45% with 131 g/ha, 80% with 261 g/ha). These data indicate that more annual bluegrass germinated after the Nov 6 application date. When treated Apr 2, 83% control occurred from 131 g/ha amicarbazone and 97% control occurred from 261 g/ha. Annual bluegrass at Sandhills Research Station was controlled 36% when treated Apr 7 with 123 g/ha amicarbazone and 95% with 246 g/ha. All Apr sequential treatments in both locations resulted in 99 to 100% annual bluegrass control. None of the bentgrass cultivars tested were injured by 123 to 131 g/ha amicarbazone when treated in Apr with a single application. 'Penncross' bentgrass stand was reduced 40% from 123 g/ha amicarbazone applied Apr 7 and May 12 and 84% when applied Apr 7 and Apr 29. Total 'Penncross' stand loss (100%) occurred from 246 g/ha amicarbazone applied Apr 7 and Apr 29 as well as Apr 7 and May 12. 'A1', 'A4', 'Crenshaw' and 'L93' bentgrass cultivars responded similarly to all treatments. A single Sep application of amicarbazone at 131 and 261 g/ha resulted in 70 to 85% and 93 to 96% phytotoxicity, respectively, 1 WAT, which resulted in 8 to 14% and 66 to 78% stand reduction, respectively, 7 WAT. A single Oct application of 131 and 261 g/ha produced 0 to 5% and 9 to 28% stand reduction, respectively, 4 WAT, which resulted in 0% and 0 to 4% stand reduction, respectively, 7 WAT. There was no initial phytotoxicity 1 WAT from the Oct or Apr applications. No bentgrass injury was observed from a single Apr amicarbazone application of 131 and 261 g/ha. 6 WA 261 g/ha sequential amicarbazone applications, 86 to 95% stand reduction was recorded in plots initiated in Oct and 37 to 51% reduction was recorded in plots initiated in Apr. 1 WA 131 g/ha sequential amicarbazone applications, 5 to 13% stand reduction occurred in Oct-applied treatments, and by 6 WA sequentials was 1% or less. There were no injury symptoms at any time from plots treated sequentially in Apr with amicarbazone at 131 g/ha. In conclusion, annual bluegrass was completely controlled postemergence in Apr with sequential applications of amicarbazone at 131 g/ha with no negative effects to 'A1', 'A4', 'Crenshaw' and 'L93' creeping bentgrass."
