Abstract/Contents:"Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua) a widely distributed prolific seed producer, with a tufted growth habit and non-uniform color makes for an unsightly appearance in highly maintained turf areas. Traditionally controlling annual bluegrass both pre and post-emergently has been obscure. The purpose of this research is to investigate the efficacy of Barricade, Monument, Prograss, and Velocity combinations for annual bluegrass control in overseeded perennial ryegrass fairways. In the Fall, of 2007 two studies were conducted by Clemson University, evaluating annual bluegrass control with combinations of Barricade, Monument, Prograss, and Velocity. The first study, which was located in Pendleton, SC at "Boscobel Golf Club", was conducted on bermudagrass fairways overseeded with perennial ryegrass at 300 lbs/A maintained at 0.5 inches. The second study was conducted at "Old Taby Links" in Beaufort, SC on bermudagrass fairways overseeded with perennial ryegrass at 300 lbs/A maintained at 0.5 inches. Plot size for each treatment measured 2.0 m by 3.0 m, replicated three times. Treatments were applied using a CO2 backpack sprayer calibrated at 20 GPA, at 30 p.s.i., with 8003 flat fan spray tips. Treatments for both studies included: Barricade 4 L at 0.75 lb ai/A 60 days before overseeding, Monument 75 WG at 0.01 lb ai/A 1 week before overseeding, Prograss 1.5 EC at 1 lb ai/A 8 weeks after overseeding (WAO)and 12 WAO, Velocity 17.6 WDG at .066 lb ai/A twice 3 weeks apart following annual bluegrass seedhead emergence. Treatment combinations of these included: Barricade followed by Monument, Barricade followed by Prograss, Barricade followed by Velocity, Monument followed by Prograss, Monument followed by Velocity, Prograss followed by Velocity, Barricade followed by Monument followed by Prograss, Barricade followed by Prograss followed by velocity, Monument followed by Prograss followed by Velocity and Barricade followed by Monument followed by Prograss followed by Velocity. Annual Bluegrass control on April 30, 2008 from the Pendleton study resulted in > 90 percent control from Barricade followed by Prograss, Barricade followed by Monument followed by Prograss, Barricade followed by Prograss followed by Velocity, and Barricade followed by Monument followed by Prograss followed by Velocity. Annual Bluegrass control of April 9, 2008 from the Beaufort study resulted in > 85 percent control from all treatments. Future research at Clemson University will be to investigate new and existing herbicides for annual bluegrass control including adjusting rates and timings of treatments. In addition, we will evaluate various herbicide combinations and programs for annual bluegrass control."
