Abstract/Contents:"An experiment was conducted to evaluate the control of smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl) with selected postemergence herbicides and their combinations. The study was conducted on a blend of turf-type tall fescue at the Landscape Management Research Center of the Penn State University, University Park, PA. Treatments were arranged in a complete randomized block design with three replications. Treatments were applied with a 3', CO2 powered boom sprayer, delivering 40 gal/A with two T-jet 6504 nozzles, on July 12, 1991. The crabgrass was in the 3 to 5 tiller stage at the time of application. Crabgrass control was rated on a scale of 0 to 100%, with 80% being considered acceptable control. Plots were rated August 27, 1991. Quinclorac 0.75 lbs ai/A and fenoxaprop-ethyl at 0.18 lbs ai/A provided the best postemergence control of crabgrass. (There were duplicate treatments of quinclorac at 0.75 lbs ai/A in anticipation that follow-up applications may have to be made.) Quinclorac applied at 0.50 lbs ai/A was insufficient to provide control of a single application. Previous research has indicated the need for two sequential applications at 0.50 lbs ai/A to provide equivalent to one application at 0.75 lbs ai/A."
