Abstract/Contents:"Penoxsulam is a new broadleaf herbicide for use in cool and warm season turf. This new active is another member of the triazolopyrimidine sulfonamide chemical family developed by Dow AgroSciences, LLC. Penoxsulam is an ALS (acetolactate synthase) inhibitor accepted for evaluation under EPA's Reduced Risk Pesticide Program. The molecule has a favorable environmental and toxicological profile with water solubility of 408 ppm at pH 7; aerobic half-life in soil of 46 days, and half-life in water 25 days. Absorbed via leaves, shoots, and roots then transported to meristematic tissue, penoxsulam is effective at low use rates of 22 to 67 gai/ha (grams active ingredient per hectare). Penoxsulam is the active ingredient in both LockUp™ and Sapphire™ specialty herbicides registered for use in established turfgrass, including residential lawns, golf courses, parks, sports fields, sod farms and around commercial buildings. Penoxsulam products sold in turf provide post emergent control of key weeds such as white clover (Trifolium repens), dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), dollarweed (Hydrocotyle umbellate), chickweed (Stellaria media) and annual sedges. Sapphire™ is a 37.5 gai/L SC (soluble concentrate) marketed by Dow AgroSciences in California and the Pacific Northwest targeted for English lawn daisy (Bellis perennis) control. Research trials in California with penoxsulam applied post emergently, twice, 30 days apart at 11 gai/ha with 0.25% v/v non-ionic surfactant illustrated 100% English lawn daisy control 1 to 3 months after application (MAA), and greater than 80% control 1 year after application (YAA). This level of English lawn daisy control far exceeded that of the standard 5 way combination that contains 2,4-D, dicamba, carfentrazone, quinclorac and MCPP. Two applications of the 5 way standard, post applied in 1% v/v methylated seed oil provided 30% control of English lawn daisy 1 YAA as compared to greater than 80% control provided by penoxsulam applied twice. In addition to penoxsulam alone, granular product registrations held by Dow AgroSciences contain penoxsulam + dicamba, and penoxsulam + dicamba + 2,4-D acid. LockUp™ is the trade name for the granular products that will be manufactured and distributed by Dow AgroSciences channel partners. Penoxsulam alone at 22 or 45 gai/ha, or penoxsulam at 22 gai + dicamba at 112 gae/ha, provided white clover control that was significantly better than common 2 or 3 way granule standards containing 2,4-D, dicamba and MCPP when applied on a product/area basis. Dollarweed control 3 to 5, or 6 to 10 weeks after application (WAA) of granular penoxsulam at 67 gai/ha ranged from 55 to 85%. While this level of dollarweed control is not complete, it was significantly better than the 35 to 50% control provided by the standard granule application of 2240 gai/ha of atrazine. In summary, penoxsulam is a new active ingredient from Dow AgroSciences, for effective post emergent broadleaf weed control in cool and warm season turfgrass. ™ Trademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC. Always read and follow the label directions. State restrictions on the sale and use of LockUp and Sapphire apply. Consult the label prior to purchase or use for full details."
