Abstract/Contents:"Purple nutsedge is a native of India and is widely distributed in temperate and tropical regions of the world. It is a perennial that produces tubers on rhizomes. Its leaves and flowering stalks generally die back in fall as temperatures decrease, but tubers and rhizomes survive in the soil and sprout the following spring when soil temperatures remain above 59°F. The majority of tubers can be found in the top 6 inches of soil where they can survive for 1 to 3 years. The purpose of this study was to evaluate traditional and new chemistry for postemergence nutsedge control. Treatments for both studies included: Dismiss 4 L at 12 oz/a, Certainty 75 DF at 0.75 oz/a, Certainty 75 DF 0.75 at oz/a + Dismiss 4 L at 12 oz/a, Certainty 75 DF at 1.25 oz/a, Monument 75 DF at 0.33 oz/a, Monument 75 DF at 0.33 oz/a + Dismiss 4 L at 12 oz/a, Monument 75 DF at 0.56 oz/a, Dismiss 4 L at 6 oz/a, Certainty 75 DF at 1.25 oz/a + Dismiss 4 L at 6 oz/a, and Monument 75 DF at 0.56 oz/a + Dismiss 4 L at 6 oz/a. All treatments included a non-ionic surfactant at 0.25% v/v. Ratings taken were for control on a scale of 0 to 100 percent, where 0 was no control and 100 was complete control and 80 percent was acceptable. The only application for both studies was made on July 24, 2006 and July 10, 2008, respectively. Purple nutsedge control rates were taken on Aug. 10, 2006 (17 DA-A), indicated no treatment provided over 80 percent. Dismiss 4 L at 12 oz/a had 72 percent control. On Aug. 18, 2006 (25 DA-A), Dismiss at 12 oz/a (92%), Certainty at 0.75 oz/a + Dismiss at 12 oz/a (93%), Monument at 0.33oz/a + Dismiss at 12 oz/a (88%), Certainty at 1.25 oz/a + Dismiss at 6 oz/a (85%), and Monument 0.56 oz/a + Dismiss at 6 oz/a (83%) all controlled the purple nutsedge greater than 80 percent. Ratings on Aug. 25, 2006 (32 DA-A) showed that Certainty at 0.75 oz/a (80%), Certainty at 0.75 oz/a + Dismiss at 12 oz/a (95%), Certainty at 1.25 oz/a (88%), Certainty at 1.25 oz/a + Dismiss at 6 oz/a (92%), and Monument 0.56 oz/a + Dismiss 6 oz/a (80%) all controlled purple nutsedge over 80 percent. On Sept. 11, 2006 (49 DA-A), only Certainty 1.25 oz/a (88%) and Certainty 1.25 oz/a + Dismiss at 6 oz/a (95%) controlled purple nutsedge over 80 percent. Finally on Oct. 9, 2006 (77 DA-A), only Certainty 1.25 oz/a (88%) had control over 80 percent. In the second study, on July 17, 2008 (7 DA-A), only Dismiss at 12 oz/a (83%) had 80 percent control. On July 31, 2008 (21 DA-A), no treatments provided control, however Dismiss at 12 oz/a (75%) was closest. On Aug, 7, 2008 (28 DA-A), only Certainty 0.75 oz/a + Dismiss at 12 oz/a (83%) and Certainty at 1.25 oz/a + Dismiss at 6 oz/a (80%) provided over 80 percent control. On Aug. 21, 2008 (42 DA-A), only Certainty at 1.25 oz/a (90%) and Certainty at 1.25 oz/a + Dismiss at 6 oz/a (93%) had control over 80 percent. Finally, on Sept. 11, 2008 (63 DA-A), only Certainty at 1.25 oz/a + Dismiss at 6 oz/a (88%) reached 80 percent control. Future research at Clemson University will include continuing to evaluate possible herbicides and rates for purple nutsedge control."
