| Abstract/Contents: | "Trials of Lolium perenne cultivars were sown at five centres in 1974 under three management regimes. Results from these trials, designated A, B and C, illustrate the variation in performance within the species L. perenne. Some cultivars suffered serious damage, from winterkill or drought, at only one or two of the five centres, but in general it appears that the data from all centres can justifiably be amalgamated and this has been done. Cultivars are grouped according to ground cover throughout the course of each trial, and scores for other features are presented. The cultivars developed recently for turf use - 'Athletic', 'Pennfine', 'Manhattan' and 'Sprinter' - gave best results in persistence, taken over all trials, as well as in reduced mowing requirement. 'Ensporta' was similar in some respects, although with some failings. 'Pelo' and 'Melle' were two other good cultivars." |
