| Abstract/Contents: | "Eighteen varieties of Lolium multiflorum Lam. and a Lolium hybrid were grown under several vernalization and daylength combinations in an attempt to discriminate between varieties on the basis of heading date. Two of the regimes (0 weeks vernalization/20-h days and 6 weeks vernalization/14-h days) were under-inductive for the Italian ryegrasses tested, with only one of the varieties reaching 100% heading. A 10-week vernalization/20-h day regime was over-inductive with six varieties having a range of only 7.6 days in mean heading date. Ten weeks vernalization/14-h days was the most successful regime for discriminating among the Westerworlds, Italian and Italian-type hybrid varieties tested, and there was a significant correlation between the number of leaves on the main culm and mean heading date. The method provided data that could be used for characterizing varieties that require description for Plant Variety Rights purposes, under controlled environment conditions, within a 2- to 3-month test period." |
