Abstract/Contents:"Annual bluegrass leaves were found to be more difficult to wet with spray solutions without surfactants due to larger amounts of epicuticular waxes on leaf surface than that of crabgrass. The effectiveness of surfactants in enhancing retention of dye solutions on leaves was related to their hydrophilicity-lipophilicity balance (HLB) values. Pegnaol ST-12 was most effective in enhancing the retention on leaves in the both weeds tested. Although the three surfactants examined in the study enhanced the spray retention at high spray volumes, retention was hardly influenced by the addition of surfactants when the spray volumes were low.Cyanazine activity increased with the addition of Pegnaol ST-12 surfactant to the spray. As surfactant concentration increased from 0.001 to 1%, cyanazine phytotoxicity increased from less than 10% to more than 80% growth inhibition."
