Abstract/Contents: | "False smut caused by Cercospora seminalis is an important disease of turf-type buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides) seed production. The disease prevents normal caryopsis development and causes considerable yield loss and reduced seed germination. Since there are no labeled fungicides for false smut, we studied in vitro sensitivity of C. seminalis to six commonly used turfgrass fungicides, namely thiophanate-methyl, boscalid, iprodione, propiconazole, azoxystrobin and pyraclostrobin. Growth inhibition of one fast growing and one slow growing isolate of the pathogen was monitored on petri plates amended with four concentrations (0.1, 1, 10 and 100 mg a.i./liter) of each commercial formulation of fungicide with three replications. The experiment was repeated and data were pooled for the analysis. Both isolates of C. seminalis were not sensitive to thiophanate-methyl. The other fungicides except for azoxystrobin had high activity against C. seminalis with EC50 varying from 0.02 to 0.17 mg a.i./liter. The azoxystrobin had a moderate EC50 value of 1.2 mg a.i./liter. A field study conducted to evaluate timing effect of application of azoxystrobin (i.e. before flowering, early flowering, late flowering and when disease symptoms are visible) did not give any significant results which were consistent with our in vitro results. Additional field tests for other fungicides are needed to determine if in vitro results are repeatable under field conditions." |
