Abstract/Contents:"Roughstalk bluegrass (RB, Poa trivialis) is a weed in tall fescue (TF, Festuca arundinacea) lawns and may be introduced as a seed contaminant. Selective herbicides are limited, and cultural control strategies would be beneficial, but these practices may also influence development of diseases such as brown patch (BP), caused by Rhizoctonia solani, or conflict with overall agronomic best management practices, leading to challenges for integrated control. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of seeding rate and mowing height on BP severity and RB colonization. Plots were seeded in September 2011 with TF at 195, 391, or 586 kg ha-1 with 1.0% RB seed contamination by weight. Mowing treatments (3.8-, 7.6-, or 11.4-cm) were initiated when turf reached designated heights. Brown patch was assessed by visually estimating the percentage of each plot displaying symptoms, and RB was assessed using an intercept grid. There was no mowing height x seeding rate interaction. In July 2012, the 7.6-cm mowing height had greater RB cover than 3.8- or 11.4-cm mowing heights. In September, whole-plots mowed at 7.6-cm averaged greater RB cover than mowing at 3.8-cm. The 586 kg ha-1 seeding rate averaged greater RB cover in September 2012 than seeding at 195 kg ha-1. In November 2012, sub-plots seeded at 391 or 586 kg ha-1 averaged greater RB cover than seeding at 195 kg ha-1. On 5 July, whole-plots mowed at 7.6-cm averaged more BP than plots mowed at 3.8- or 11.4-cm. On 18 July, whole-plots mowed at 7.6 or 11.4-cm averaged more BP than plots mowed at 3.8-cm and sub-plots seeded at 586 kg ha-1 had more BP than subplots seeded at 195 kg ha-1. All treatments yielded acceptable establishment of TF, but higher mowing heights and seeding rates generally resulted in increased RB colonization and BP incidence."
