Abstract/Contents:"Moss and algae are found in turf areas because conditions are not good for growing dense, healthy turf. Factors which favor the growth of algae are wet, humid, full-sun conditions, with compacted, water-logged fertile soils with thin, weak turf. Factors which favor the growth of moss are wet, humid, shady conditions, acidic, infertile, poorly drained water-logged soils, areas with excessive thatch and thin, weak turf. The only permanent control of moss and algae is to correct the condition reducing grass growth. The following cultural practices, which are discussed in the article, can help accomplish this: 1)maintain good soil fertility, 2) improve drainage, 3) increase light penetration and air circulation, 4) cultivate compacted soils, and 5) avoid excessive irrigation. The following chemical control are only temporary and problems will reoccur unless growing conditions are improved: 1) Copper sulfate, 2) Ferrous sulfate, 3) Non-selective herbicides."
