Abstract/Contents:"Bermudagrass cultivars are normally established from sprigs during an active growth period in spring or early summer. Annual grasses present serious competitive weed problems during this optimum establishment period. Oxadiazon, metribuzin and MSMA have been used successfully for control of annual grasses in established bermudagrasses. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of oxadiazon, metribuzin, and MSMA on establishment of bermudagrass from sprigs. Bermudagrass cultivars ('Vermont', 'Tufcote', 'Tifway' and 'Midiron') were tolerant to oxadiazon at 2 to 4 kg/ha during sprig establishment. The rate of root and shoot growth from sprigs was excellent in oxadiazon-treated plots and similar to that in untreated plots. A formulation that contained oxadiazon plus bensulide was inhibitory to both root and shoot growth. Metribuzin was delayed for 3 weeks after sprigging bermudagrass cultivars as a postemergence annual grass control treatment. While shoot growth was good, giving a similar rate of groundcover to untreated plots, metribuzin caused considerable injury to root development from the sprigs. MSMA allowed excellent sprig establishment. A tank mixture of metribuzin plus MSMA appeared similar to metribuzin alone on the bermudagrass sprig growth. It appeared from these studies that oxadiazon may be used successfully at the time bermudagrass sprigs are transplanted for control of annual grasses including crabgrass and goosegrass."
