Abstract/Contents:"Wild oat (Avena fatua L.) plants on roadsides are considered by farmers to be a seed reservoir for infesting small grain fields. Actually, wild oat has been a weed in small grain and other crops in the Northern Plains since early settlers planted contaminated seed they brought from Europe (Lee, et al., 1980). By the early 1930's it infested more than 80 percent of crop land in western Canada used for small grain production (Banting, 1982). Thirty years later wild oat was reported in five North Texas counties and adjacent Oklahoma (Greer and Peeper, 1981). Infestations of wild oat on roadsides are not susceptible to accepted agronomic practices such as crop rotation, fallow, selective grazing, intensive cultivation or herbicide incorporation. Good turf of perennial warm season grasses seems to offer very little competition to cool season wild oat plants. At the same time, the perennial grasses are not as restricted as small grain crops in defining candidate herbicides."
