| Abstract/Contents: | "Correlative inhibition was investigated in plants of Agropyron repens at two temperatures. Reciprocal inhibition occurred between the main shoot apex and the outgrowing axillary shoots, with the balance of inhibition varying with temperature. Apical dominance was stronger at 10 °C than at 20 °C , but even at 10 °C release of apical dominance by decapitation had only minor effects on the timing of outgrowth, growth pattern and rate of dry weight accumulation of the axillary shoots. Dominance of the main shoot apex by the axillary shoots was stronger at 20 °C than at 10 °C. Removal of axillary buds prevented decline in size and activity of the main shoot apex and resulted in increased rates of primordium initiation, leaf emergence and dry weight accumulation in the main shoot. It is suggested that a system of reciprocal dominance provides a mechanism for maintaining the characteristic habit of the grass plant and limits growth in height of vegetative shoots." |
