Abstract/Contents:"Fertility research has declined in recent years because, from a practical standpoint, (1) few, if any, new slow-release products are being developed, (2) the trend has been toward greatly reducing nitrogen use rates and increasing multiple applications at very low rates, (3) lawn care companies such as ChemLawn have conducted their own research, (4) minor nutrient mixes are being applied without regard to need, (5) use of private soil test laboratories had greatly increased, and (6) there is little consideration for cost of fertilizer products. Some relatively new developments however may increase research activity in turfgrass nutrition: (1) it has recently been suggested that the use of sulfur has encouraged the development of the "black layer" in sand modified soils, (2) use of nitrogen fertilization to reduce chlorosis associated with the use of plant growth regulators, (3) development of new rhizotron facilities, (4) recent research at Penn State that is defining parameters of nutrient loss on sloping, natural soils, (5) work conducted in Kentucky relative to nitrogen and pH effects on earthworms and microanthropods, and (6) work conducted in several states concerning the effect of nitrogen nutrition on water use rates."
