| Abstract/Contents: | "Spring growth of tall fescue(Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) can be managed by using plant growth regulators. Imazapic is an imidazolinone that could regulate tall fescue growth at low rates. Imazapic was applied to tall fescue in early April of 1997 at rates of 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 oz/a with a methylated seed oil (MSO) adjuvant or a nonionic surfactant (NIS). Imazethapyr (1 oz/a) and mefluidide (4 oz/a) with NIS were included along with an untreated control. Spring forage yield was reduced relative to the control by all regulators, but reductions were greater from imazapic than from melfluidide. Seedhead density was reduced 82% by the mefluidide treatment, 96% by imazethapyr and more than 99% by imazapic treatments. Foliage color was similar to that of the control where mefluidide and imazethapyr were used but was reduced by the 2 and 3 oz/a rates of imazapic. Plant stunting also was greater from treatments of imazapic compared to mefluidide and imazethapyr. Stand ratings near the end of the summer were reduced in comparison to the control by imazapic rates of 1.5 oz/a or more. Effects of adjuvant (MSO and NIS) were similar. Imazapic could be an effective tool to regular the amount of fescue growth for purposes such as legume establishment." |
