| Abstract/Contents: | "The maintenance of an intact vegetation cover on outside runs for laying hens is important for reasons of soil protection and animal welfare. However, stocking with chickens exerts a considerable strain on the vegetation; therefore sward degradation is a common issue. The present study is aimed at exploring the potential of a novel measure of run management: the choice of plant species with high tolerance towards stocking with laying hens. In a field experiment, we tested the performance under conditions of chicken grazing of fourteen grassland plant species, among which seven turfgrass cultivars. Growth rates, tiller density/density of vegetation growing points and canopy cover were assessed in order to derive the performance of the species based on a comparative analysis of these target parameters. Our data revealed larger inter-specific variation in tolerance towards chicken grazing; grasses generally performed better than forbs. Under the experimental conditions applied, tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) Mustang and supine bluegrass (Poa supine) Supreme showed the best overall performance. The results of this study indicate that the choice of plant species with a high tolerance towards stocking with laying hens can - when combined with further measures of run management - contribute to the maintenance of an intact vegetation cover in the outside run." |
