Abstract/Contents:"It is standard practice to use rotary mowers to mow lawns in private gardens. They allow a clear cut of the greamineae stalks and the resulting swathe can be used in very different ways. The very first rotary mowers used to throw the swathe on the sides, which made it necessary to gather this swathe in a second workstep. Nowaday modern mowers are equipped with grass-collectors, which no longer necessitate the raking of the grass after mowing it, it prevents so an additional workstep. Therefore, mulching-mowers or recycle-mowers are used more and more often. Because of the particular form of their blades and their frame, the swathe is literally sucked up and swirled in the grass-collector, where it is shred so that it can at last remain on the turf. It is no longer necessary to remove it from the lawn. Consequently, the automatic mowers, the so-called autonomous mowers, are more and more in use in private gardens. They mow the lawns even many times a day according to their programming and this saves the working hours which would have been needed for the mowing. One can basically put into question if the lawns of private gardens should stand so many cuts and, as a consequence, what are the advantages for the lawns when taking into consideration the cultivation requirements. One can ask too what is the impact of the different mowing arts on the swart. Therefore, tests were made on an existing garden lawn divided in lots with two mowers with different frequency, a rotary mower with grass-collector and mulching-mower. The changes in the varieties of gramineae, the density and the colour of the turf as well as the nutritive substances feed-back were analysed. Thank to an overall intensive fosterage the appearance of the lawn improved on the four lots. However, during dry spells the lawns where swathes were gathered revealed faster many symptoms of "drought stress" than the lawns covered with mulch. The lot Nr.1 mowed every day with an autonomous mower had the best appearance. However, it was impossible to ascertain the quantity of nutritive substances contained in the swathe during this testing period. Furthermore, the purchasing prices for an autonomous mower are very high compared to those for petrol-driven rotary mowers and their installation is very time-consuming too. The autonomous mowers need definitely less energy than the petrol-driven mowers, but, because they are in use every day, respectively even twice a day, they merely need more energy than the petrol-driven mowers. It would be better to develop an environmentally compatible instrument which allows a visually appealing turf and, at the same time, functions with an energy-saving technology."
