Abstract/Contents:The football season should be planned into periods of good wear tolerance of the grass as well as the soil material. The grass should be actively growing to be as tolerant as possible to mechanical damage. Dormant grass does not resist wear at all. The wear tolerance of turf is depending on both how tolerant grass is to wear and how the top soil reacts upon different weather conditions. When you build a football field you always have to compromise between: a) good growing conditions, risks of rapid soil compaction, less good playing under wet conditions, less maintenance work, and b) less good growing conditions, no risks of soil compaction, better playing in wet weather, more maintenace work. * The present football season is an acceptable compromise. * The first match during the spring season should be played somewhat later becasue of the temperature situation. * The summer break could be used. It is not very likely that the grass will lack wear resistance because of high temperature stress. * Because of high rainfall in September - October the autumn season should be shortened. Water run off problem due to compacted soil should be avoided by means of proper design. In old football fields these disadvantages might be less serious by repeated aerifications and dressings. None of these maintenance jobs are done as they should be. * Good care of the grass gives good wear tolerance."
