Abstract/Contents:"Aside from water permeability and soil stability, the grounds shear strength is one of the most important criteria of football pitches (Skirde, 1974). According to standardised regulations for natural turf football pitches (Blueprint DIN 18035-4, 2007) laboratory measurement of the shear strength of the root zone mixture was implemented. On basis of this recently introduced regulation the shear strength of different football pitches was measured in four areas, typical for their different wear intensity, with two different methods: - using a standard shear vane, and - using a surface shear stamp. Additionally interactive criteria like soil compactness, density and composition of the sward, water content and main root depth have been measured. Results showed that in situ shear strength values of the soil get up to 230 % of the demanded shear resistance for laboratory trials due to plant roots and soil compaction through wear. Surface shear strength was particularly influenced by sward density and composition. Soil shear resistance measured with shear vanes and surface shear strength measured with shear stamps just sometimes correlate to each other."
