| Abstract/Contents: | "The aim of the study was to characterize wear tolerance of selected varieties of perennial ryegrass with respect of their mechanical properties. The results may be important selection criteria for breeding wear tolerance within this species. The field experiment was carried out in 2010-2011. Wear treatment was applied using Brinkman Traffic Simulator. In April of 2010 the seeds of perennial ryegrass were sown in sand/clay/compost mixture and up to the end of the year the high quality sport turf was obtained. The sport traffic was simulated once a week from April to November 2011. Wear tolerance was measured by visually rating the percentage of the surface covered by the turfgrass foliage. The mechanical properties (tensile and compressive strength) of leaves was determined using strength testing machine MTS Insight 2. The relationship between wear tolerance and some mechanical properties of perennial ryegrass was determined." |
