Abstract/Contents: | "The biofuel industry in the United States has become a source of a number of co-products that are of potential use in agriculture. These products include biochar from fast pyrolysis, distillers grain from ethanol production, and a variety of materials from cellulosic ethanol production and the manufacture of biodiesel. Fast pyrolysis also yields a mixture of bio-oil co-products that may be of use in agriculture. There are also other co-products from the grain industry, such as corn gluten meal and soy gluten that are currently being used. These are economic restrictions on the use of these co-products in many areas of agriculture. The turfgrass industry has less economic restrictions and may provide a potential market for these materials. At Iowa State University, we have been working on the use of biochar as an amendment for sand-based root-zone media for turfgrass areas. We are also experimenting with bio-oils and grain proteins for use as alternative pest control products. The results of several experiments will be discussed." |
