Abstract/Contents: | "Grass species represent traditionally an essential part of roof greenings. The market offers a broad variety of materials for vegetation layers. The vegetation technological properties of the materials differ strongly. The preferences of grass species towards substrates vary as well. The Austrian Federation of Green Roofs and Green Facades (VfB) and the Institute of Soil Bioengineering and Landscape Construction (IBLB) at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna started a research project named GrünStadtKlima. The aim of this project is to investigate the suitability of eight selected grass species for materials typically used for roof greenings. The following parameters are assessed: individual degree of coverage, growth height, vitality and inflorescence. The results show significant differences in the development of the grass species on the tested vegetation layers. Substrates with higher water capacities and nutrient content reveal a strong dominance of grass species while on nutrient poor and dry substrates grass species hardly establish. A durable roof greening relies on a profound designed seed mixture in accordance with the vegetation layer material." |
