| Abstract/Contents: | "Air and water movement to and beyond the depth of grass roots is well documented. Earthworks operations in sports pitch construction often pay little attention to the nature and condition of the sub-grade immediately below the topsoil layer. Ripping of virgin subsoil or compacted sub grade fill material to the full depth of at least 450mm is often overlooked and careful planning of the return of topsoil over the sub-grade deserves careful consideration. Undue compaction of the sub-grade significantly reduces the potential of drainage to lower layers. Whether or not lateral pipe drainage and secondary slit drainage is installed the importance of downward drainage into the sub-grade, however slow, is invaluable in the removal of surplus water at the depth of the roots. Proper preparation of the sub-grade also enables a better transition between topsoil and the material below often reducing the need for the accepted depth of topsoil. Furthermore, the incorporation of gypsum into heavy clay subsoil brings about physical changes in the material providing better movement of air and water beyond the depth of the topsoil." |
