Abstract/Contents:"Field surface characteristics were studied in relation to the occurrence of two weed species, Zoysia japonica (Zoysia grass, possibly an ecotype derived from cultivar 'El Toro') and Urochloa subquadripara (Signal grass), at the 3Ws Oval, Barbados - a sand-capped, tropical, grass sports field. Turf and weed cover were scored on three occasions at 24 sampling points on the field using a 1m2 quadrat at each location. Additional determinations were made within a 1m2 quadrat placed at 2m intervals along two 16m long transects running in the north-south direction 15-25m to the east and west of the wicket square. Apart from grass cover scores, observations within quadrats included appearance and performance characteristics along with potentially diagnostic features including soil moisture status and penetration resistance. At the time of sampling, the planted Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon 'Princess-77') accounted for only 42% of the field cover with Zoysia and Signal grasses accounting for 23% each and the remaining area was covered by other weeds. Bermuda grass was dominant mainly in the northern and western sectors of the field and in areas immediately outside the wicket square. Zoysia grass was extensive in the eastern and southern sectors and along the field perimeter on both sides of the boundary rope. Patches of Signal grass were observed throughout the field except in areas heavily colonized by Zoysia grass. Bermuda grass cover was positively correlated with turf greenness index and soil penetration resistance at 7.5cm depth. Turf shear strength was positively correlated with surface hardness, turf surface penetration resistance and ball roll distance. Ball roll distance was positively correlated with soil penetration resistance in deeper soil layers (12.5cm and below) suggesting that faster outfield areas may result from surface flattening caused by heavy machinery traffic, which can also lead to deep soil compaction. Correlations between grass cover and soil penetration resistance in deep soil layers were strongly positive for Zoysia grass, negative for Signal grass and non-significant for Bermuda grass. Field quality characteristics, other than greenness index, do not appear to be directly affected by the occurrence of weeds on the field, but results suggest that soil compaction may be contributing to the spread of Zoysia grass at the 3Ws Oval."
