| Abstract/Contents: | An ornamental lawn was supplied with 12, 24 or 36 g N/m2 and the dry matter yields, plant nutrient contents and nutrient uptake from the soil were determined for N, P, K, Ca and Mg. With increasing N levels the dry matter yields and N and K contents rose considerably whereas the P and Mg contents were hardly affected and the Ca content decreased. Highly significant positive correlations were found between the P and K, N and K, and Ca and Gm contents and a significant negative correlation between N and Mg, independent of N fertilization. The N:P2O5:K2O ratio in the dry matter (average for the 3 N treatments) was 1:0.41:0.82 and this varied little with the treatments, the P2O5:K2O ratio remaining constant at about 1:2. Increased N favored the growth of Poa pratensis at the expense of Festuca rubra and Poa annua. Because of the high K uptake, the K content of the soil can be depleted rapidly, resulting in decreased growth vigor and reduced winter-hardiness. |
