Abstract/Contents:"In 1987, a 29 questions sod production survey was mailed to Florida sod producers to obtain an estimate of the size and scope of the industry. This report is limited to only acreage data. From an original list of 119, 46 of the survey respondents were identified as sod producers. Based on these completed survery instruments, there were over 61,000 acres in production with more than 35,000 acres of sod harvested in 1987. Sod produced on organic (muck) soils, and mineral (sand) soils were in excess of 33,000 and 26,000 acres, respectively. Sod production was reported in 27 counties in Florida, with Osceola County having the most farms. The grasses were ranked in production and harvest acreage as follows: St. Augustinegrass, bahiagrass, bermudagrass, centipedegrass, and zoysiagrass."
