Abstract/Contents:"Tifdwarf, a new variety of warm season turfgrass belonging to Cynodon, was introduced from America in the early 1900's. Its establishment areas reached nearly two million square meters after 4-year introduction, breeding and extension. It was appreciated by the afforesting departments and units in the middle and low reach of Changjiang River and South of China. Having the characteristics of strong adaption, rapid growth, low grass layer, dark green colour, short knot, small leaf, traffic tolerance, hot and dry tolerance, and strong regeneration, it was usable to scenery afforesting and turfgrass establishment of the resting square and advanced spots [sports] ground. Through systematical observation and research for two years, we have mastered its major reproductive characteristic, laws of its upground stolon growing and branching, and effects of the day average temperature on its green period. Some reproductive characteristics of Tifdwarf were comparied [compared] with three local varieties of Cynodon. Besides some common characteristics such as well-developed stolon, strongest branching and rooting capacitym some specific qualities of Tifdwarf have been found in our study, which provided a scientific basis sor [for] further development and utilization. Also some practical preventive methods and control measures are put forward to deal with the major diseases and pests found in the investigation in Nanjing."
