Abstract/Contents: | "The physiological responses of Festuca arundinacea to salt stress were studied through cultivation on a sandy base. The items of observation included relative fresh weight, relative dry weight, root/shoot ratio, proline content, chlorophyll content and root activity of the grass under conditions of varied salt concentrations. It was observed that a low concentration of salt (50mmol/1 NaCl) had no significant effect on the growth of the grass, though the plant already responded to the salt stress with a dramatic increase in the proline content in leaves. With an increased salt concentration, the advers [adverse] effects of salt stress on the grass became more obvious, which were reflected in decreased fresh weight, dry weight and root activity; and the plant responded to the environmental changes with further increases in the proline and chlorophyll contents in leaves. The significant positive correlation between the root/shoot ratio and the salt concentration indicated that a salt stress caused by NaCl might bring about more injury to the shoot than to the root tall fescue." |
