Abstract/Contents:"This study was conducted during 1996~1997 on the Taiyuan-Jiuhuan highway in Shanxi province to test the effect of a combined engineering-biological technique for stabilising the side slopes of the highway. In comparison to the case in which only engineering measures were taken, the new technique proved to be preferable, with a better viewing brought about by established turf grasses, enforced protection to the slopes and decreased cost. The best species of grass for side-slope stabilisation appeared to be Festuca arundinacea, which can be established on slopes by turf transplantation or direct sowing."
