Abstract/Contents:"In this study the heat tolerance of 5 cool season turfgrass cultivars was evaluated under field heat stress in Hainan Province. The result showed that heat stress resulted in leaf wilting, growth reduction initially, then leaf firing, and reduction in coverage and root mass finally. Leaf firing rate could be used as a sensitive index by which the extent of heat stress injury to turfgrass were assessed at the early stage. The heat tolerance among 5 turfgrass cultivars was ranked as Pacer tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) > Houndog tall fescue (F. arundinacea) > Merit bluegrass (Poa Pratensis) > Derby ryegrass (Lolium perenne) > Cobra creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris). Temperature 28~36 °C was considered the crucial range, 28~32 °C was the initial range, and 32~36 °C was the detrimental range in which heat stress injury to cool season turfgrasses occurred."
