Abstract/Contents:"The effects of three heavy metal ions including Cd2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+ on seed germination, shoot cell membrane permeability and CAT enzyme activity of Festuca arundinacea were investigated. The result showed that 0.5 mg/L and 5 mg/L Hg2+ promoted seed germination, significantly (P<0.01), 50 mg/L Cu2+ significantly inhibited the germination (P<0.01), 500 mg/L concentration of these three ions significantly inhibited the germination significantly (P<0.05). With the increasing of ions concentrations, membrane permeability of tall fescue increased gradually. Under 0.5 mg/L Cd2+ or Hg2+ treatments, membrane permeability significantly decreased (P<0.05). Hg2+ caused the highest membrane permeability under 5 mg/L & 50 mg/L treatments. The membrane permeability of Cu2+ treatment was the highest under 500 mg/L concentration. With increasing concentrations of heavy metal ions, the catalase (CAT) activity increased gradually. Under 0.5 mg/L concentration, CAT activity of Cu2+ treatment was higher correspondingly. Under 5 mg/L concentration, CAT activity of Hg2+ treatment was higher. Under 50 mg/L concentration, CAT activities of Cu2+ and Hg2+ treatments were higher than that of Cd2+. CAT activity of Cu2+ treatment was higher under 500 mg/L concentration. Germination rate correlated to membrane permeability, both were negatively correlated to CAT activity. The toxicity of Cu2+ to seed germination was the lightest and the Cd2+ was the most serious."
