| Abstract/Contents: | "Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) is a major ingredient of detergent of daily use which enters the environment as a pollutant. In this study the effect of LAS on the early stage growth of some turfgrasses was investigated. The results indicated that a low dosage of LAS could stimulate the growth of turfgrasses at their early growing stage, while a high dosage would inhibit their growth. The effects of LAS on seed germination, the height of seedlings, the length of young roots and on the content of chlorophyll were shown significant. Judged by comprehensive indices, Trifolium repens showed the highest endurance to LAS among the 4 species tested; the endurance of Festuca arundinacea was higher than that of F. rubra and Poa pratensis which showed no significant difference between themselves." |
