| Abstract/Contents: | "The expanding capacity of 28 Kentucky bluegrass varieties introduced from Europe and America was studied in greenhouse and field at Lanzhou, Gansu, China, in 2001. Parameters used for study including maximum expanding distance (MED), actual coverage area (ACA), potential coverage area (PCA) and tillering capacity (TC). The results indicated that the expanding capacity were significantly different (P<0.01) among the tested varieties. The tillering rate of tested plants and the tiller number per tillered plant among the varieties varied from 19.1% to 83.5% and from 1.1 to 2.9 tillers per plant, respectively, after 3 month growth in the greenhouse. At the end of sowing year in the field, the parameter values among the varieties ranged from 27.3 to 63.5 cm per plant for MED, from 240.4 to 930.2 cm2 per plant for ACA, from 306.6 to 1670.2 cm2 per plant for PCA, and from 245.5 to 567.8 tillers per plant for TC. The expanding capacities were divided into 3 groups by cluster analysis method based on weighted mean of the above 4 parameters. The maximum capacity group included following 6 varieties: Baronie, Fylking, Geronimo, Julia, Mardona and Monoply [Monopoly]. The medium capacity included 18 varieties, the examples are Barlin, Baron, Merit, Ram 1 and Sydsport. The minimum capacity included varieties of Andante, Compact, Conni and Elysee." |
