Abstract/Contents:"Based on the comprehensive analysis of turf establishment data in the transition zone, the authors found the turf grasses best adapted to the transition zone climate were Zoysia japonica and Fescue [Festuca] arundinacea. The brown color found in Z. japonica was due to dormancy during the winter and could be solved by the following two techniques: one option was to over-seed with either Lolium perenne, Poa trivialis, or creeping Fescue [Festuca] rubra in the autumn, this was done in order to provide a temporarily seasonal turf. The other option was to establish a stable and permanent polystand turf by mixing Z. japonica with F. arundinacea. The latter option was currently being studied but as yet was not used commercially."
