Abstract/Contents:"This study evaluated the effect of differing nitrogen levels (0, 0.5, 5, 10, 15, 20 mmol/L) on the winter performance of F. arundinacea cv. Pixie, both in a pot [plot] and field experiment. In the plot trials without N applied, F. arundinacea grew slowly and had both poor leaf color and turf quality, however it was shown to have good cold tolerance. At a high N level (20 mmol/L) the growth increased, however was shown to have a decreased cold tolerance, and was shown to degrade turf quality in the winter. In the field plots with N, F. arundinacea was of better quality, with early green-up, and was not adversely affected during the winter period. However, fertilization during winter was not beneficial for the winter performance of F. arundinacea as in contrast, winter fertilization may cause quicker growth in the spring, leading to more clippings."
