Abstract/Contents:"The physical properties of golf green rootzone mixes were valuated using twenty-eight different sand materials mixed with peat. The particle size, uniformity of grain size distribution and shape of grain varied with sand types. The physical properties of the mixes were determined by the sand used. For the 75/25 sand/peat mixes, hydraulic conductivity changed from 95 to 827 mm/h, total porosity (at -3 kPa matric potential) from 38.8% to 47.2%, air-filled porosity (at -3 kPa matric potential) from 0/9% to 24.6%, and capillary porosity from 17.7% to 42.1%. Drainage rates and the balance between air-filled and capillary pore space primarily depended on sand size, while bulk density, total porosity and shear strength mainly depended on the uniformity of the grain size distribution. Rootzone mixes tended to have less pore space when grains were more rounded and more spherical. The more spherical the sand, the more shear strength of rootzone mixes. Sand types did not significantly influence the hardness of rootzones."
